Do I have to know how to ride a bike?
Actually, no! Most of our bikers had little experience biking before doing Beer Bike for GSA. You do not have to own a bike or even know how to ride. We will train you to do everything... and it is surprisingly easy to learn.
Do I need to own a bike or other equipment?
GSA will provide all the bikes and other equipment needed (shoes, helmets, etc)
Can I use my own road bike in the race?
If you own a good-condition road bike, preferably with clip pedals, that you want to use, you are welcome to do so. Some of our more experienced bikers who own bikes even lend them to GSA for use during the race.
Is it too late to try out for this year?
It's actually never too late to try out for beer bike... Chugging OR Biking. We take new people any time. The only requirement is that we get a few time trials for you before the race so we can form our teams from the fastest people. But anyone who tries out is automatically "part of the team". Bike and Chug practices are a lot of fun and a great way to meet people from other departments... you're really welcome any time.
Ok, I want to try out. What do i do?
For Biking - Email the appropriate captain if you want to come out when there is not a regularly scheduled team practice. Otherwise, simply show up to the next practice. See the schedule. Things to bring: comfortable but fairly form-fitting exercise clothing, tennis shoes, water. If you're going out to the track you may want to bring sunscreen. Everything else is provided, though you are welcome to bring your own bike/helmet/etc.
For Chugging - Chug practices are held every Thursday inside valhalla at 9:00 PM... just show up!
Do I have to chug flat beer?
Nope! You can choose to drink water, lemonade or sweet tea if you so desire. Many of our chuggers do not chug beer.
